WFMW: Back to School Tip: Trust Your Instincts and Have Fun!

This month’s theme for Works for me Wednesday is “Back to School Tip.” These two tips I have are directed toward fellow new-to-homeschooling moms, but even if you don’t home school (or have been homeschooling a while), it’s still good advice. 🙂

I wasn’t homeschooled growing up, but I always knew I would homeschool my child(ren). For me, it was a no-brainer. The schools where I lived were flawed on so many levels and there was no way there would be any other option for me.  Thankfully, I have a husband who is very supportive of homeschooling!

Still, as much as I knew I was going to homeschool,I was very of nervous about it and spent a lot of time getting everything “just so.” I searched for the perfect curriculum, endeavored to put together the perfect schedule and gathered everything into our schooling area. In other words, my perfectionist tendencies kicked in big time! 😉 I also did a ton of research and asked tons of questions to every seasoned homeschooling mom I met!

It was in talking with one of those seasoned moms that I got the best advice ever:

There is no perfect curriculum or the perfect schedule. No one knows your child like you do. And, yes, you’ll make mistakes. Try different things and keep what works and disregard the rest. Ultimately, you know what’s best for your family!

The second best advice I got from a seasoned home schooling mom is this:

Life is messy. Stuff happens. Schedules get turned around and kids (or yourself) gets sick. Home schooling isn’t about “doing school at home” but about loving your children and helping your children to grow into Godly adults.

Relish the time with your children and enjoy the process of homeschooling. Time will fly and before you know it, they will be heading for college!
