Keeping Kids Safe on Youtube

Hat tip to Money Saving Mom for pointing me to this post by Jenae! As soon as I discovered this tip I knew I had to share it with you, especially for those who allow their children to watch YouTube videos.

I use YouTube videos several times a week during Andrew’s homeschooling, and it can be such a burden. I am constantly having to be  so diligent that he won’t see something inappropriate in the ads, suggested videos, etc. It is time-consuming, and sometimes I am not always successful in blocking everything.

So, what is this recommended resource? It is called “Viewpure.” I have used the site a few times already in the last couple of days, and I am very, very happy with the results! That’s not to say that I’m not cautious anymore, because I am, but Viewpure make the job just a little bit easier.

By the way, do you have any tips or ideas for keeping kids safe on YouTube or online in general? Do share in the comments!

7 Quick Takes: (Almost) Ephiphany Edition

— 1 —

Although here in the US we celebrate the feast of Epiphany on the Sunday between January 6th and 8th, today is the “official” or traditional feast day of Epiphany.

— 2 —

As I was looking for suggestion on how to make the feast of Epiphany special for my family, I came across this house blessing on the USCCB website.

On the Youtube home page there was a link to a video of a young man of 18 who died of a serious heart condition on Christmas Evening. He uses flashcards to tell his story (no words), but I got tears in my eyes watching this video:

No matter what a person believes in regards to near-death experiences, one can still be touched by this young man’s spirit. My heart and prayers go out to his surviving family and I am praying for the repose of his soul.

I can’t believe that I am actually going back to college! For a long time I have wanted to go back to school to get a bachelor’s degree in English, and the Lord has opened the doors for it to happen. I am taking two online courses to start: “Business Writing” and “The Short Story” starting January 18.

It is very exciting but I’m kind of nervous, too. I won’t tell you how long it’s been since I’ve been in a classroom, but let’s just say it’s been a long while. 😉

Please say a quick prayer for my six-year-old son who isn’t feeling well. He has a cold and an upper respiratory infection. He is definitely on the mend, and sounds worse then he says he feels; still, he has had some severely painful sinus headaches. Thanks!

Are you familiar with paperback swap? I joined recently and loving it.

It’s kind of a book club where you earn credits that you can use to get other books for “free”. When you join the site and upload 10 books, you get 2 credits to get you started. You can use these credits to choose a book from the hundreds of choices. When someone orders one of your uploaded books, you earn one credit when he or she confirms that the book has been received.

The only payment is the shipping. You pay the shipping to send the books to those who requested them and when you request a book, the sender pays the shipping to you. Using media mail, the shipping is around $2.82 and upwards, depending on the weight of the book.

My “theme” or “word” for 2012 is “peace“. My scripture reflection for the year is John 14:27: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”

My prayer for you is that you be filled with God’s peace and joy in the midst of any and all struggles and challenges you may face (or are facing) in your life.

Be Still and Know That I am God

Need a few minutes to refresh your spirit and quiet your heart? Then take a few minutes to listen to this beautiful YouTube video and rest in the Lord:

(Linked to Fearless Friday.)

You are Precious (My First Video)

I posted my first video to YouTube recently. It is a little encouragement from Isaiah 43: 1-4. I pray that this little video touches your heart.

(P. S. I look so serious, don”t I! I didn’t mean to, but I was nervous doing my first live video. I was going to re-do it; but, I had already done the video several times so I went ahead and left it as is. 🙂 Hopefully the videos will get better in time.)

Here are the verses written out, in case you didn’t understand my reading of the passage. Again, It is from Isaiah 43: 1-4. I read from the New American Bible, Personal Edition:

“Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name: you are mine. When you pass through the water, I will be with you; in the rivers you shall not drown. When you walk through fire, you shall not be burned; the flames shall not consume you. For I am the Lord, your God, the holy One of Israel, you savior. I give Egypt as your ransom, Ethiopia and Seba in return for you. Because you are precious in my eyes and glorious, and because I love you.”

Have You Seen the “Mom Song” Yet?

If not, here’s your chance. 🙂 This YouTube video is so funny and yet so SPOT ON! I’ll re-watch this every once in a while when I need a laugh. Enjoy!
