Mercy Bible Study: Session 4 Reflection

Did you make it through all the readings for this session. There were a lot, right?! I many of the readings but I wasn’t able to finish them all. It was okay because, as you may have noticed, it was easy to get the gist of the themes.

I have to be honest and admit that this session was a little dry and difficult to get through. However, my biggest takeaway from this session was the reminder of God’s faithfulness. Father Pacwa writes:

“In fact, the reason he shows the people mercy is because he remains faithful to the covenantal relationship, even when they become unfaithful” (75).

No matter what we have done or do, God remains faithful. So often, we turn away from God and sin. We live as if He doesn’t exist or doesn’t matter. Still, His love is constant and continual. He gently tries to get our attention and showers us with graces but they often go unrecognized.

Thankfully, He is always ready to take us back the second we turn to Him. This is a sign of His great mercy. There may be consequences for our actions but God does not punish or turn away from us. He accepts and loves us just as we are, with all our faults and foibles. God remains steadfast and faithful and we can put our trust in that!

What is your biggest takeaway from the lesson? Did you find it dry and difficult to work through? Why or why not?

Powerful Prayer: Saint Patrick’s Breastplate

Many of us are familiar with the part of the St. Patrick’s Breastplate prayer that says, “Christ be with me, Christ be behind me…” But did you know there is a lot more to the prayer. Color me red but I didn’t.

I recently came upon a small collection of spiritual warfare prayers and the Breastplate prayer was among them. Wow, it is one powerful prayer! Since I found the prayer I have been saying it every day and it is quickly becoming one of my favorite prayers. 🙂

In honor of Saint Patrick’s feast day tomorrow I am going to share the prayer. I hope it becomes one of your favorite prayers, too. As far as I can tell, the prayer is in public domain (written about 477 AD) but if I’m wrong, please let me know!

Saint Patrick’s Breastplate

I armor myself today with the power of the Most Holy Trinity,
in the oneness of God, Creator of the universe. I armor myself
today with the baptism of Christ, his crucifixion and resurrection,
his ascension and glorious second coming.

I armor myself today with God’s guidance to direct me, God’s might to
direct me, God’s might to sustain me, God’s wisdom to instruct me; God’s
word to give me speech, God’s shield to protect me; God’s army to
defend me against the snares of demons, against the lure of vices,
against all who plot me harm.

I invoke all these virtues today against every hostile and merciless
power that may assail me, against the incantations of false prophets,
against the black laws of heathenism, against the false laws of heresy,
against the deceits of idolatry, against every art and spell that binds
the soul to evil.

Christ guard me today against every poison, burning, drowning and fatal
wounding. Christ be with me, Christ be behind me, Christ be within me,
Christ be beside me, Christ to win me. Christ to comfort and restore me,
Christ to be where danger threatens, Christ be in the hearts of those
around me forevermore.

Prayer to Keep the Presence of God

“You will show me the path to life, fullness of joys in your presence, the delights at your right hand forever.” Psalm 16:11

Remaining in God’s presence during the day is a very important aspect of the spiritual life. I know for myself, I want – and need – to stay grounded in His presence; but alas, I fail short so many times.

Then I started praying this prayer that I found in the book Handbook of Prayer (aff link page 43). I’ve been praying this prayer first thing in the morning for a while now, and I am so pleased that my mind keeps going back to this prayer during the day! In hopes that this prayer will help you remain in God’s presence, I want to share this with you. ( The author is not listed, so I don’t know who the author is):

Prayer to Keep the Presence of God

“Lord God Almighty, You have brought us safely to the beginning of this day. Defend us today by Your mighty power, so that we may not fall into any sin, and that all our words may so proceed and all our thoughts and actions be so directed as to be always just in your sight. through Christ our Lord. Amen.”
