How to Pray the Angelus (The Angel of the Lord)

Are you familiar with the Angelus? Traditionally, Catholics pray the Angelus three times a day: 6am, 12pm, 6pm. Some Catholics pray the prayer just at noon, which is great too.

This prayer is so beautiful and would make a great personal novena. If you are looking to sneak in some prayer into your busy schedule, this would be a great prayer to start with.

The Angelus

The Angel of the Lord declared to Mary: And she conceived of the Holy Spirit.

Hail Mary, full of grace…

Behold the handmaid of the Lord: Be it done unto me according to Thy word.

Hail Mary, full of grace . . .

And the Word was made Flesh: And dwelt among us.

Hail Mary, full of grace . . .

Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray

Pour forth, we beseech Thee, O Lord, Thy grace into our hearts; that we, to whom the incarnation of Christ, Thy Son, was made known by the message of an angel, may by His Passion and Cross be brought to the glory of His Resurrection, through the same Christ Our Lord.

31 Days of Prayer – Guardian Angel

If yesterday hadn’t been a Sunday, it would have been the feast of the guardian angels. Sunday always takes precedence over any other memorials, feast days, and even most solemnities. However, I think it is important to remember our guardian angels.

Most of us who are cradle Catholics are taught about angels at a young age. We picture angels who are sweet cherubs watching over us as we sleep. We are taught the prayer to our Guardian Angel. But, as we get older, devotion to our guardian angels fall by the wayside.

I would love to change that. I think we could all do well to remember our guardian angels (and all the angels). They are great protectors and guides that God has given us to help us on the way to salvation. And let’s be real. Some angels may be sweet and cherub-like but angels are spirits  and powerful warriors and defenders of the faith!

Additionally, whether we recognize them or not, our guardian angels are by our side always, not just while we are kids. Your angel is with you at this very moment.

So, today, let us pray the prayer to our guardian angel with devotion and fervor. Let us remember to talk to our angels and ask for their assistance. (It may sound crazy, but I had a personal experience with an angel that I share here.)

“Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom His love commits me here. Ever this day be at my side, to light and guard, to rule and guide. Amen.”
