Ten Family Fun Things to do in New Jersey

New Jersey may be known for its beaches and parks, but there are tons of things to do as a family! Yes, there’s Atlantic City, but there is also a ton of amusement parks, miniature golf, great restaurants, museums, aquariums and concerts. You can take all sorts of classes such as dance classes, pottery classes and learn about our environment.

If you are a resident of New Jersey look for something new to do, or coming to New Jersey for vacation, here are some fun things you may want to do:

1. Catch some coasters. There are several amusement parks in NJ, but Six Flags, Great Adventure is one of the best. It has not just rides, but a wild safari as well. It’s not exactly cheap mind you, but hey often have special and you can always find coupons. (Here’s a link to their verified coupon page.) Either way, it’s worth every penny!

2. Get wet. Right next door to Great Adventure is Hurricane Harbor. It has a ton of water rides to suit everyone in your family. There are other water parks around NJ, too.

3. Go to an arcade. There are a bunch of arcades available around the state; especially down the shore. If you are going to be in Central Jersey, check out Bev and Wally’s.

4. Go to the aquarium. I have never been to the Adventure Aquarium in Camden, NJ but its website makes the aquarium look fantastic. It has many exhibits and shows that are fun for all ages. And, it claims to be the “America’s most touchable aquarium.”

5. Hit the (miniature) golf course. There are plenty of places to go miniature golfing, but I am choosing SwingTime to highlight because it is open year round; and, besides golfing it has a family fun center with batting cages and arcades.

6. Become a cowboy (or cowgirl). I remember going on a trip to Wild West City on a school trip years ago. It was tons of fun! From their website: “WILD WEST CITY is a western heritage theme park that brings the old west back to life through portrayals of real-life western characters, legendary events and a frontier town re-creation. Featuring twenty-two (22) different live action shows throughout the course of the day, Wild West City offers the visitor the chance to “live” in the old west!”

7. Go to a concert. For many, summertime is also concert time! Many of the shore points offer free concerts at least once a week. Wednesdays are free concert nights at Sandy Hook. With a few clicks you should be able to find concert areas where you are.

8. Learn a little science. A trip to New Jersey wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the Liberty Science Center. This place is amazing!  And while you are in the area, you can grab a ferry to see the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.

9. Become a Pirate. The Jersey Shore Pirates is an interactive museum that allows your kids to participate in activities such as finding sunken treasure and firing water cannons.

10. Tour a real battleship. You can take a two-hour tour of Battleship New Jersey, one of America’s most decorated battleship. Not only is the tour interactive, but you can even schedule to stay overnight!

There’s tons more to do than what’s on this list, especially if you like to eat! There are many awesome restaurants around the lovely state of NJ, too. (But that’s for another top ten list!)

  2. I’m from Jersey Carol and this brought me back! Great Adventure was my favorite place as a kid and my the aquarium in Camden is great. Have fun this summer and thanks for visiting! Check out hellomornings on Twitter for great friends up early with you!

I grew up in NJ, too. Moved out for 6 years and now on my way back in! 🙂 Loved Great Adventure as a kid, too.

I will check out hellomornings. Thanks for inviting me!

  3. My friend runs this site, http://www.nj411.com/ that dynamically displays upcoming local events.

My family likes carnivals and fairs. There are many church carnivals but we’re usually too busy until after school lets out – and all the church carnivals are already over by then! We’ll be going to Freedom Fest this coming week near Allentown and then, of course, the Monmouth County Fair in East Freehold.

I’ve gone to some birthday parties at Swing Time in Howell. I can’t say I would go of my own volition but as a party it was fine. We’ve sort of sworn off Great Adventure. However, we like Jenkinson’s Boardwalk in Pt. Pleasant and their aquarium year-round. Their coupon deals Easter weekend are great. Also, Seven Presidents in Long Branch built a new playground last season – it’s really awesome.

Take care – always happy to read about Jersey.

Thanks for posting that site. We love carnivals and fairs, too. I can’t wait for the next Monmouth County fair. I haven’t been there in years!

My in-laws took my son to Seven Presidents Park recently and said it was awesome, too.

I am so looking forward to being permanent residents in NJ again!
