Book Review: No Cape Required: 52 Ways to Unleash Your Inner Hero

Book Review of No Cape RequiredFrom the Book Description:

“What do Katniss Everdeen, Spider-Man, and huckleberry Finn have in common? They’re heros-and you can be just like them. In these pages, Kristen Parrish looks at the qualities of fifty-two heroes and then shows how you can acquire every one. No gamma rays or radioactive spider bites are needed.”

My Comments:

Who doesn’t love a hero? We all want (ed) to be one. My son is frequently pretending he is Spider-man or running around the place with a towel around his neck like Superman. Many of us (dare I say all of us?) wish we had some kind of superpower. What we don’t always realize however, is that we do have a superpower. Actually, we have something greater than a superpower. We  have God! And God, in His mercy and through His grace. gives us what we need to live out our vocation to love and serve others.

That is what Parrish reminds of in this book. Using the example of ordinary “people” (many of them fictitious characters in books and movies), she shows us how we can have our own superpowers. And what are those superpowers? Some of them include “patience,”” compassion” and “Independence.” Others are superpowers I never would have thought of, such as “Intrepidness,” “rising to the occasion” and “mentoring.”

Each devotion is short and I love that each one includes a prayer and offers practical opportunities to “take action”  and put the newfound superpowers to work.

I very much recommend this book and give it four (4) stars.
