Book Review: A Love Undone by Cindy Woodsmall

A love UndoneFrom Book Description:

“At the age of nineteen, Old Order Amish Jolene Keim was on the brink of happily-ever-after when everything changed, stealing the future she expected and burdening her with an unbearable decision. For the next ten years, Jolene threw herself into family life-and then she meets Andy Fisher. The horse trainer and father to a sweet nine year old challenges her and holds up a mirror to issues Jolene has been unwilling to face.”

My comments:

I read one other story by Cindy Woodsmall, which I enjoyed, and so I was very happy to have the chance to read and review A Love Undone. Woodsmall’s writing is unique among the many Amish novel writers I’ve read before.

A Love Undone is a different and compelling Amish love story. The protagonist, Jolene, is a strong, relatable character who deals with the difficulties of life head-on. At the same time, she allows her emotions to show through and takes responsibility for her mistakes. I love that she is “human” and I was immediately drawn in by her courage and fortitude.

The other characters are just as interesting and delightful, even the supporting characters. I love Lester who gives the appearance of being stubborn and cranky, but is loveable at heart.

I also love that Woodsmall tackles a subject I’ve never heard of, “grass widower.” For the Amish, a grass widower is someone whose spouse has left them (for whatever reason). She also writes about mental illness, which is a very challenging subject to begin with, and does so with sensitivity and respect.

I think you will enjoy this novel and give it four (4) stars.
