Prayer for the Deceased

Yes, today is Halloween but it was originally celebrated as “All Hallow’s Eve.” All Hallow’s Eve was (is) the day before All Saint’s Day which is the day we remember all the “unsung Saints” who are now in Heaven.

Something not so mentioned (or popular) nowadays is All Soul’s Day. It is a day that we pray in a special way for the souls in Purgatory. The official day All Soul’s Day is November 2 but we can (and should) pray anytime for those dear souls. So, let us do so today:

Receive in tranquility and peace, O Lord, the souls of your servants who have departed this present life to come to you. Grant them rest and place them in the habitations of light, the abodes of blessed spirits. Give them the life that will not age, good things that will not pass away, delights that have no end, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.”St. Ignatius of Antioch

May all the souls of the faithful departed rest in peace!

31 Days of Prayer – Act of Hope

Yesterday we prayed the Act of Faith. Today we will pray the Act of Hope.

The Act of Hope isn’t, “Oh God, I hope this will happen.” or “I hope so!” This prayer is an acknowledgement of our need for God and our hope for His guidance and help.

This is the traditional version of the prayer:

O my God, relying on Your almighty power and infinite mercy and promises, I hope to obtain pardon for my sins, the help of Your grace, and life everlasting, through the merits of Jesus Christ, my Lord and Redeemer. Amen.”

Isn’t that a beautiful prayer?

31 Days of Prayer – Prayer for Patience

As much as I hate it, I struggle with patience. I want it done and I want it done now! LOL! And sometimes, I’m just not so sweet about it. Therefore, I pray often for patience. Can you relate?

I thought for today that we could pray for patience together. Pray to be patient and gentle with those around us. I found the following prayer a while ago but forgot about it but I think it would be perfect for today’s prayer:

Bestow on me, O Lord, a genial spirit and unwearied forbearance; a mild, loving, patient, heart; kindly looks, pleasant cordial speech, and manners in the exchange of daily life; that I may give offense to none, but as much as in lies live in charity with all men.

31 Days of Prayer – Saint Bruno

Saint Bruno, whose optional memorial we celebrate today, is the founder of the Carthusian monks. The Carthusians is the one of (if not the most) strictest religious order in the Catholic Church.

The Carthusians spend their days in silence, penance and prayer. We may not be able to live our lives quite the same way as they do; however, we can strive to imitate some aspects of their spirituality. For example, we can make an effort to shut down some of the noise in our lives so that we can have some time of silence for the Lord. (Do we really need the TV or radio on all the time?) We can all make time for more prayer and if you don’t believe me, get a copy of my cheat sheet on how to make time for prayer. We can also do penance in small ways such not eating that second piece of cake, etc!

Today, let us ask Saint Bruno to intercede for us and to help us have a deep desire to live for God alone:

O God, who called Saint Bruno to serve you in solitude, grant, through his intercession, that amid the changes of this world we may constantly look to you alone. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.”

31 Days of Prayer – Healing & Protection

Today I want to share a prayer that has touched me in deep ways. It is a healing and protection prayer that  my husband gave me before we were married. When Michael was in college (Franciscan University of Steubenville), he received this prayer from a priest, Fr. Hilz. This priest gave out this prayer to everyone who went to him for confession.

I first shared this prayer a few years ago and it quickly became one of the most popular posts on this blog. From the responses I have received, in the comments and privately, this prayer has been a blessing to many people. Therefore, I have decided to link to this prayer today.

There are so many people who are in need of healing and it is good to ask God’s blessing and protection on us and all that is ours. And, I pray that this prayer is a blessing to you, too. at the end of the prayer is a link to print out the prayer (no opt-in required). I hope you will print out the prayer and pray it regularly.

Healing and Protection Prayer

Heavenly Father, I praise and thank You for all You have given me and ask forgiveness for my sins. Please cover me with the protective Precious Blood of Your Son, Jesus Christ (Exodus 12:7), and increase your Holy Spirit in me with His gifts of Wisdom, Knowledge, Understanding, Discernment (1 Corinthians 12:4-11), Guidance (John 16:13) and Hunger for Prayer to help me know Your will and surrender to it more completely. (Titus 2:14)

Holy Spirit, please remove more blocks in me to receiving and sharing Your love and grace;“…Continue Praying…
