Resources For Learning More About Catholic Indulgences

Recently,ย  I answered a reader’s question about indulgences. There are a lot of misconceptions about indulgences, even among faithful Catholics; thus, for those looking to go deeper into their understanding of this tenet of faith,ย  I thought I would share some further resources that do a good job explaining everything a Catholic should know about indulgences.

Resources for learning more about Cathoic Indulgences

1. Catechism of the Catholic Church (scroll down to article 1471-1479)

2. New Advent (does a good job explaining what indulgences are not)

3. Catholic Answers (debunks the usual myths about indulgences)

4. Catholic Online (introduction to indulgences)

5. Our Catholic Faith (general information)

6. Catholic Answers forum (A good discussion about indulgences)

7. Catholic City (simplified version of the catechism articles on indulgences)

I hope that these resources are helpful and give you a better understanding of the place of indulgences in our Catholic faith. Even more importantly, I pray that these resources will inspire your faith and they encourage you to gain indulgences so that you will grow ever closer to our Lord. (Just remember, indulgences can’t buy you into heaven!)

7 Quick Takes: Lenten Randomness

— 1 —

May I start with a prayer request? One of my dear friend’s father was confirmed with stage 4 lung cancer. I believe he is only in his 60s. Please not only pray for him but for his family. Thanks.

— 2 —

Reminder for those of you who participate in the First Friday Devotions to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, today is First Friday. ๐Ÿ˜‰ If you don’t participate in the First Friday devotions, Lent would be a good time to start!

— 3 —

While I am at it, tomorrow isย  First Saturday which is traditionally devoted to Our Lady. Lent would be a good time to start the First Saturday devotions, too.

— 4 —

A beautiful song that is perfect for Lent: (It is 4 minutes and 21 seconds)

— 5 —

There are 31 days until Easter Sunday. Andrew’s birthday the 31st and so falls on Easter Sunday this year. He is absolutely thrilled and excited to have his birthday on Easter and is counting the days. Not that he would be any less excited if his birthday didn’t fall on Easter. ๐Ÿ™‚ Every year since he was three he has been counting down to his birthday starting in January! Remember those days when you were excited for your birthday to come?!

— 6 —

What are you making for dinner for this Lenten Friday? If you are looking for ideas, here is a list of some meatless recipes. Still, I’m always looking for new recipes, especially for meatless ones for Fridays because we forego meat even outside of Lent. I don’t want to fall into the rut of having pizza or fish sticks every week. Tonight I’m using a shrimp recipe that Jen (Conversion Diary Jen) shared a while back. (Scroll down to #6 to see the recipe.) It is ridiculously easy to make and so good. I’ve made it three times so far and it’s been a big hit every time.

— 7 —

Finally I thought I’d share this website that I found called Praying Lent. It has prayers and other resources such as an online Lenten Retreat. I haven’t delved that far into the website yet, but what I’ve seen so far looks good.

God Bless you!

7QT: “It’s Been a While” Edition

It’s been a while since I’ve participated in 7QT so I’m glad to be here this week. I usually write my 7 Quick Takes around a theme, but today I feel like just posting some boring tidbits. ๐Ÿ™‚

— 1 —

ย Have you ever watched The Big Bang Theory? I happened upon the show by accident several weeks ago and have been hooked ever since! All I could think of is “How did I not watch this show before?!” Some of the themes of the show is inappropriate (the premarital stuff) but the other parts are so funny. Sheldon just cracks me up! If you have any amount of the nerdy in you, you should check it out.

— 2 —

I’m really happy that I’ve actually been following through with my goal to write for 5 minutes per day. It may not seem like much but it is a good start for me. The nice thing is that most days, once I get started I usually write for longer – often up to 15 minutes. I shared a little about my experience with getting back to writing here.

— 3 —

As I’m writing this, I’m watching The Wedding Planner on AMC. Not one of my favorite movies but it’s okay. I liked Jennifer Lopez better in Maid in Manhattan. One movie I can watch over and over again? You’ve Got Mail. Yep, definitely one of my guilty pleasures!

— 4 —

You would think by reading numbers 1 and 3 that I’m a big TV person but I’m not. I used to watch a lot of TV but I’ve lost my taste for most of it through the years. It seems like every show I sit down to watch has a liberal agenda or is so poorly written it’s ridiculous.

— 5 —

But, there are some shows I really like such as Castle, Body of Proof and Scandal. These shows are well-written with engaging and interesting storylines. (The fact that all three shows are on ABC was not expected or planned. ๐Ÿ™‚ )

— 6 —

I can’t believe that classes are starting up again on Tuesday. On the one hand, I’m not ready to get back into the crazy schedule of papers and tests but I am excited to move forward in my goal to get my bachelor’s degree. This semester I have speech (interpersonal communications), American Literature II, Biology and Business Writing. All of the classes except speech are online.

— 7 —

The class I am dreading the most is speech. I don’t know how I am going to be able to stand up in front of the class full of teeny boppers (well, high school graduates) to give a speech. I barely can speak a sentence in front of more than three or four people. I know God will be with me and I suppose it will be a good opportunity to practice my word for the year – trust. ๐Ÿ™‚

7 Quick Takes: The Website Hosting Drama Edition

I had planned last week to do a 7 Quick Takes sharing our plans for Lent this year. Unfortunately, it never got written because:

— 1 —

Thursday afternoon I typed the web address to log into my WordPress website dashboard and found the website GONE! I got an error saying that the “web address on this server does not exist.” My heart nearly stopped!

— 2 —

For five days I had no access to my site. I had no idea if I would lose all my data or if I would have to re-install WordPress and start all over again.

— 3 —

What happened? Well, there was some kind of problem with the servers at the company I use for my web hosting, Dreamhost. It took them five days to do a file system check and then restore the data. I can’t even begin to tell you how frustrating it was. But then again, as a blogger I’m sure you can imagine!

— 4 —

The most frustrating part? Dreamhost’s lack of communication in regards to the situation. If I was Dreamhost, I would have sent out an email broadcast to the customers letting them know of the issues and that they were taking care of the problem. Letting the customer discovering the problem on their own like I did, just doesn’t seem like good business sense to me.

— 5 —

Not to mention the fact that when I contacted support, I got an automated email with a link to their blog. So it was up to ME to go find out the status of the problem. That was an added annoyance to an already bad situation. If they just had someone at the company take a minute to send out email updates, there would have been less aggravation and frustration on the customer – and I’m guessing I’m not the only Dreamhost customer to feel this way.

And the worse part is that there was NO mention of any compensation or credit to its customers for the hassle and inconvenience they went through. I thought of contacting them and asking them about a possible credit or compensation; but, since they couldn’t think enough of their customers to offer one, I didn’t bother.

— 6 —

Having said all this, I’ve been with Dreamhost for five years and this is the first major issue I’ve had with them. There were a few times I’ve had issues, due to my own fault, and their customer service was awesome. They responded quickly and resolved the issues right away; which is why I think I was so upset in how they handled this situation.

— 7 —

Now, I’m in a quandary. I am seriously considering switching hosting companies when my subscription is over. I’m torn though. I’ve been happy with Dreamhost over the past few years. However, I really feel like the way Dreamhost handled this situation (allowing the sites being down for so long, and lack of communication) is serious enough to switch.

What do you think? Should I stay with Dreamhost or should I switch? What would you do if you were in this situation? And while I’m asking, what hosting company do you use to host your website? How has your experience been with said company? Please, do share your thoughts and experience and wisdom!

7 Quick Takes: Pinterest Edition

My son’s birthday isn’t until the end of March, so it’s technically a little early to be thinking about his birthday party. However, he is very excited to be turning 7 this year and has been talking about since CHRISTMAS! He is dead-set on wanting a Transformer’s themed birthday party and wants his guests to dress up as their favorite Transformer’s character. (His is Bumblebee.)

I have no clue on how to pull off a Transformer’s themed party, so I headed over to one of my favorite places: Pinterest. They didn’t have much but I did find some interesting ideas. Many of them were for a 5 year-old, but I think I can make them work for Andrew.

— 1 —

Like these cool invitations via Mom’s Happy Place:

— 2 —

And this cool looking cake via Meredith Snyder:

— 3 —

These party favors are cute, if not a little too young for Andrew, again via Mom’s Happy Place. I think I can put something together similar but, we’ll see. I’m not the most creative person. Hence the need to go to Pinterest for ideas!

— 4 —

I’ll probably have to find some paper products similar to the ones posted by Cheryl Lucas.

— 5 —

Not on Pinterest, but on Pizzazzerie.com, I saw some good ideas for the food…

— 6 —

The room posted here via Holly Anfang, can’t be done at my house, but it does give some decorating ideas.

— 7 —

One think lacking on Pinterest is Transformer games and/or crafts to do with the children. I did find these ideas on ehow-com. And I did find this site with some ideas that I should be able to adapt to Andrew’s age group.

If you have boys and any suggestions on pulling off a Transformer birthday party (or don’t have boys but still have ideas!) please share. I could use all the help I can get!
