31 Days of Prayer – Saint Francis of Assisi

Today is the memorial of the very popular Saint Francis of Assisi. He is known for creating the first (live) Christmas manger, for his poverty, and for his joy. He is also known for having received the stigmata (the visible wounds of Christ on his flesh).

Most of us are not called to live a life like his but we can imitate his virtues in other ways. We can use the gifts God gives us (materially and spiritually) with discretion and carefulness. We can strive to find joy in all circumstances. This can be so hard, though, when we are suffering or going through difficulties. St. Francis suffered much in his life but he always retained joy and hope. He CHOSE joy and we can too!

He also prayed for peace. There was a lot of turmoil in the world around St. Francis’ time and there is certainly turmoil in our world today. He wrote a beautiful prayer for peace that I want us to pray together today:

Make Me a Channel of Your Peace by Saint Francis of Assisi

“Lord, make me an instrument of thy peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love; Where there is injury, pardon; Where there is doubt, faith; Where there is despair, hope; Where there is darkness, light; Where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master, Grant that I may not so much seek To be consoled as to console; To be understood, as to understand; To be loved, as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive; It is in pardoning, that we are pardoned; It is in dying that we are born to eternal life.”

You may be familiar with this prayer. It has been made into a song frequently sung at some churches. Today, pray slowly over these words. Let them sink into your heart. When you get discouraged and feel hopeless. Know that you can make a difference through prayer and by being an instrument of peace to one person at a time.
