Being a mom is not easy; especially when you’re figuring out how to get in shape. From after-school activities, to work demands, to thinking about going and getting that second degree, there always seems to be little to no time for your personal fitness goals. It seems there is always some new diet craze or exercise regimen that poses as an easy way to reach your goals, but, even if you get around to trying them, the results can be hit or miss. But, fortunately, there is a way that every mom can get the body she wants. One of the best ways to work toward a fitness goal is to stick to the basics, and there is no better way to get in shape and stay healthy than by lifting weights. Even though it may seem like an activity reserved for athletes, a good weight training strategy is the ultimate way to lose weight and get fit. Here are some of the top reasons why every mom should be lifting weights:

1. Burn Fat

This may be one of the biggest misconceptions in fitness, but many women still think that building muscle will make them look more bulky. In fact, this could not be further from the truth. The reality is that muscle does the exact opposite; muscle burns fat! So, forget the elliptical and the stair master, what you really need in order to get rid of that cellulite is some good, healthy muscle on your body. The reason muscle burns fat is because it uses calories just to exist. Even if you’re sitting reading the paper, the muscle on your body will be burning a small but consistent amount of calories all day.

2. Get Your Cardio

While everyone needs to set aside some time for pure, intense cardio, this is never the most exciting thing to do. Unless you’re an avid runner or love to play a sport, the thought of an hour of cardio is enough to make many moms reach for their sweat pants and ice cream. However, weight training is actually one of the best ways to get a healthy cardio workout. It requires intense breathing, movement and focus. It’s also great because you’re not stuck on some exercise machine for thirty minutes.

3. Do Everything Better

Muscle is what makes your body go. So, it only makes sense that the more you have, and the healthier it is, the better your entire body will move and function. This means that, after six months of weight training, you may feel totally psyched for that belly dancing class you were too afraid to take on before. The more you develop your muscles, the easier it will become to move in all ways. So, really, with some good, consistent weight training under your belt, the sky is really the limit.

4. Keep Up With the Kids

The more muscle you build, the easier every activity becomes. And, the easier every movement becomes, the longer you will be able to sustain than movement without needing a break. That’s why weight training is one of the best things you can do to boost your endurance. Not only will you be able to participate in fitness activities that you never thought of before, you will be able to keep up with the pace of daily life in whole new ways. Think about being able to run around with the kids in the back yard without feeling tired. The joy of being able to actually play with your kids is one of the biggest gifts from a successful weight training routine.
