31 Days of Prayer – Saint Anthony Mary Claret

Today is the optional memorial of Saint Anthony Mary Claret. He was a bishop and great preacher. He was also the confessor for Queen Isabella II.

Saint Anthony was a fearless preacher and is a great example to us. We probably aren’t called to be preachers or missionaries but we are called to “preach” through our lives. May we follow his example and speak to others about Christ when we can and to let Christ shine in our lives.

Here is the prayer to Saint Anthony from the liturgy:

O God, who for the evangelization of peoples strengthened the Bishop Saint Anthony Mary Claret with admirable charity and long-suffering, grant, through his intercession, that, seeking the things that are yours, we may earnestly devote ourselves to winning our brothers and sisters for Christ. Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.”

Saint Anthony Mary Claret, pray for us!

Here is a lovely prayer I found on EWTN:

O Holy Trinity, we thank you for having given to the Church Pope John Paul II, and for having made him shine with your fatherly tenderness, the glory of the Cross of Christ and the splendor of the Spirit of love

He, trusting completely in your infinite mercy and in the maternal intercession of Mary, has shown himself in the likeness of Jesus the Good Shepherd and has pointed out to us holiness as the path to reach eternal communion with You.

Grant us, through his intercession, according to your will, the grace that we implore, in the hope that he will soon be numbered among your saints.
Amen.”

31 Days of Prayer – Prayer for Patience

As much as I hate it, I struggle with patience. I want it done and I want it done now! LOL! And sometimes, I’m just not so sweet about it. Therefore, I pray often for patience. Can you relate?

I thought for today that we could pray for patience together. Pray to be patient and gentle with those around us. I found the following prayer a while ago but forgot about it but I think it would be perfect for today’s prayer:

Bestow on me, O Lord, a genial spirit and unwearied forbearance; a mild, loving, patient, heart; kindly looks, pleasant cordial speech, and manners in the exchange of daily life; that I may give offense to none, but as much as in lies live in charity with all men.

31 Days of Prayer – Our Father

Toward the beginning of this challenge, I put a spotlight on the Hail Mary. Today, I want to highlight one of the most important prayers we can pray: the Our Father.

Of course, what makes the Our Father so unique and powerful is that it is the prayer given to us by Jesus Himself.

Every word of the Our Father is so rich and full of meaning. The very first words, Our Father, is amazing. It was particularly amazing in Jesus’ time.

I hope you will take some time to slowly and carefully pray this prayer that you probably have been taught as a child. Meditate on the words and let them sink in. Let them fill you. Let them challenge you. Let them change you.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. Amen.”

31 Days of Prayer – Saint Paul of the Cross

Today is the optional memorial of Saint Paul of the Cross, the founder of the Passionists religious community.

Saint Paul had a great appreciation and love for the suffering Jesus. He also had a deep understanding of the meaning of the Cross and its place in our lives. He embraced his sufferings (great and small) and united them to Christ.

I wish I could do that more faithfully! I don’t know about you but I balk at the slightest sufferings. There are certain things I’ve had to deal with because of my cerebral palsy and issues related to my condition; however, I can’t say that I’ve always accepted those issues. Oh no, I’ve fought them more often than not!

I am guessing that I’m not alone here so let’s ask Saint Paul to help us love and accept our Crosses like Jesus did. The following prayer comes from the Christian Prayer book of the Liturgy of the Hours:

Father, You gave your priest Saint Paul a special love for the cross of Christ.
May his example inspire us to embrace our own cross with courage. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one god, for ever and ever. Amen.”

31 Days of Prayer – Saint Luke

Today is the feast of Saint Luke. Saint Luke was a physician and considered the author of the gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles.

Not surprisingly, Saint Luke is the patron saint of physicians and doctors. Therefore, let us pray for all doctors and physicians and all those in the medical field. It is not an easy field to be in and they need God’s wisdom and guidance as they diagnose and treat their patients. More importantly, they need to have compassion and love for their patients. It really makes a difference, as you probably know if you’ve ever encountered a rude or nasty doctor!

So let us pray:

Most charming and saintly Physician, you were animated by the heavenly Spirit of love. In faithfully detailing the humanity of Jesus, you also showed his divinity and his genuine compassion for all human beings. Inspire our physicians with your professionalism and with the divine compassion for their patients. Enable them to cure the ills of both body and spirit that afflict so many in our day. Amen.”  —anonymous

31 Days of Prayer – Pray for Peace

At the beginning of the month, we prayed the Peace Prayer of St. Francis. However, the need to pray for peace has been weighing heavily in my heart.

31 Days of Prayer - Pray for Peace

We live in such a broken world. There seems to be violence and hatred everywhere. So many people are louder and ruder and generally disquieted. Peace seems impossible but nothing is impossible with God. Let us pray for peace within our hearts, peace with our neighbors and peace for the whole world.

Here is a little prayer I wrote:

Heavenly Father, we come to you humbly to ask You to bring peace into our world. Peace starts with ourselves, so please help us to turn our hearts to You, the giver of true, lasting inner peace. As St Francis asks, help us to be an instrument of peace to others. We ask for peace in the hearts of our neighbors, and yes, peace to our “enemies” Bring Your peace to the whole world. We ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.”

Watch this video from Reba McEntire. It is a simple,  yet powerful, message and reminder for us to pray for peace.

31 Days of Prayer – St. Teresa of Avila

Today  is the memorial of St. Teresa of Avila. She is a great saint and was a reformer of the Carmelite Order. She was a prolific writer and spiritual guide in her day and sometime after her canonization she was declared a “doctor of the church.”

Although not a prayer, per se, I want to share the following counsel of St. Teresa. We can make this our prayer today and remind ourselves that “God alone suffices.”

Let nothing disturb you. Let nothing make you afraid.
All things are passing. God alone never changes.
Patience gains all things. If you have God you will want for nothing.
God alone suffices.

St. Teresa

Saint Teresa is the patron saint of those who suffer from headaches and illness so let ask her intercession for our friends and loved ones who suffer from those ailments.

31 Days of Prayer: Abandonment to God’s Providence

I found the following prayer in the book, Handbook of Prayer, and I love it! If you are short on time, this would be a great prayer to substitute for your regular morning prayers (or a great addition to it):

My Lord and my God: Into your hands  abandon the past and the present and the future, what is small and what is great, what amounts to a little and what amounts to a lot, things temporal and things eternal. Amen.”

St. Josemaria Escriva

It is certainly a short and powerful prayer. It is a little scary, too. I don’t know about you but I have a tendency to want to hold on to things and control things. This prayer is a prayer of letting go and that isn’t always easy! So, let’s pray that we have to courage to pray this prayer with conviction and truth. 🙂

31 Days of Prayer – Our Lady of Fatima

Today is the anniversary of the last visit of Our Lady to the children at Fatima, Portugal. In honor of this day, I found this beautiful prayer:

Prayer to Our Lady of Fatima

Dearest Mother, Queen of the Holy Rosary, who came to Fatima to reveal to all mankind the Divine plan for true Christian peace, of prayer, penance, and consecration, grant an abundance of grace, strength, and guidance to the members of Thy Fatima Crusade, here present and throughout the world. Inspire us to great zeal, oh great Mediatrix of All Graces, that we may be effective instruments in spreading devotion to Thy Rosary; that we may be faithful in wearing Thy scapular; that we may inspire our brothers in Christ to a life of sacrifice, penance, and modesty, and finally, that we may help to bring about that wonderful day when all men, through consecration to Thy Immaculate Heart, shall be one in Christ. Amen.”

I do not know the author of this poem but I found it on the Salve Maria Regina website. You can go there to get other Fatima prayers, to learn the story of Fatima, and to learn about the lives of the three children who were privileged to get those heavenly visits from Our Lady.
